Logo Dounreay Site Restoration Limited Intermediate Level Waste management facilities Dounreay Nuclear Research Site, Caithness, Scotland

Overview

In the UK, Intermediate Level Waste (ILW) packages are held in modern engineered stores, until a disposal route becomes available. Dounreay’s higher activity waste is typically equipment from reactors, items used to handle spent fuel and the cladding of fuel element. The volume of higher activity waste Dounreay will manage is expected to be in the region of 15,000m3

Strategy

Zyda Law assisted DSRL in settling an ILW planning strategy designed to achieve the necessary grant of planning permission and radioactive substances authorisation for an ILW store.  We assisted in the BPEO, public consultation, scoping of the environmental statement and production of the planning application.

Outcome

Planning permission and RSA authorisation was granted for DSRL’s ILW storage facility.
