The MoD undertook an extensive (countrywide) consultation exercise to determine an interim storage for laid-up (nuclear) submarines (‘ISOLUS’).
We provided expert advice on the land use implications and relevant consenting regimes to achieve the timely development and implementation of a solution for the dismantling of the UK's defueled nuclear powered submarines which inspires public confidence, is safe, environmentally responsible, secure and cost effective. We advised on civil nuclear liabilities, the requirements for achievement of the necessary grants of planning permission and the need for nuclear site licence. Utilising our cross sector experience we developed a bespoke authorisation route map, designed to guide the project to a successful conclusion.
The project was suspended pending the government’s consultation exercise on the options for the long-term management of radioactive waste.
