Logo Dounreay Site Restoration Limited Remediation of radioactively contaminated land Dounreay Nuclear Research Site, Caithness, Scotland

Overview

Dounreay needed to remediate contaminated land and radioactively contaminated land. These two separate but complementary legal regimes require the site licence company to remediate land and water to avoid pollutants linking to environmental receptors. Alongside these legal obligations, Dounreay’s ongoing decommissioning activities must also comply with EU water protection legislation.

Strategy

Drawing on our extensive experience of EU and UK environmental law and policy on contaminated land, we produced definitive advice across seven different but complementary legal regimes, highlighting DSRL’s legal obligations and an environmentally acceptable remediation strategy.

Outcome

With our guidance,DSRL, SEPA and the local planning authority have settled a strategy for the identifying and remediation of radioactively contaminated land.
